| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να σκιαγραφήσει το πολύ πρόσφατο παρελθόν της Ελληνική κοινωνία και τα αποτελέσματα της οικονομικής κρίσης όπως βιώθηκαν από το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της κοινωνίας. Η οκταετή περίοδος στερήσεων και σκληρής δημοσιονομικής προσαρμογής αποτυπώνεται με την μελέτη και την εξέλιξη βασικών οικονομικών και κοινωνικών δεικτών καθώς και των πυλώνων που ορίζουν το κοινωνικό κράτος. Στο πρώτο μέρος προχωρήσαμε σε μία περιοδολόγηση του σύγχρονου Ελληνικού κράτους όπως ορίζεται η περίοδος από την ίδρυση του πρώτου Ελληνικού κράτους το 1829-1830 έως και τις απαρχές τις κρίσεις το 2010. Σταθήκαμε στον τρίτο μεγάλο κύκλο της κατάτμησης αυτής με ανάλυση των οικονομικών μοντέλων ανάπτυξης που ακολουθήθηκαν σε κάθε υποπερίοδο της σε συνδυασμό των κοινωνικών εξελίξεων που βρίσκονται σε αλληλουχία με την οικονομική πορεία της χώρας. Για την περίοδο αυτή εξετάσαμε επίσης κύριους τομείς της οικονομίας όπως το δημόσιου χρέους, το ΑΕΠ και το ισοζύγιο τρεχουσών συναλλαγών. Στο δεύτερο μέρος προχωρήσαμε στην συλλογή και ανάλυση δεδομένων από εγχώριες και εξωτερικές στατιστικό-οικονομικές πηγές με διαγραμματική παρουσίαση τους ώστε να αντιληφθούμε καλύτερα την εξέλιξη κοινωνικών μεταβλητών στην πάροδο των τελευταίων δύο δεκαετιών και ιδιαίτερα πως εξελίχθηκαν κατά την μνημονιακή περίοδο. Εξετάσαμε τομείς όπως η ανεργία, τα επίπεδα απασχόλησης και την πορεία του εργατικού δυναμικού της χώρας, την πορεία των εργασιακών σχέσεων, τα επίπεδα φτώχειας και κοινωνικού αποκλεισμού σε συνδυασμό με τις κοινωνικές παροχές καθώς και ποιο ευαίσθητους κοινωνικούς δείκτες όπως το ισοζύγιο γεννήσεων-θανάτων, την εξέλιξη των αυτοκτονιών κατά την περίοδο της κρίσης και τα επίπεδα γήρανσης του πληθυσμού. | dc.description.abstracttranslated | This thesis attempts to outline the recent past of Greek society and the effects of the economic crisis as experienced by the majority of the population. The eight-year period of austerity and rigorous fiscal adjustment is documented through the study while monitored social indicators as well as the pillars that define the welfare state. In the first part, we proceed to periodize the modern Greek state from its establishment in 1829-1830 up to the onset of the crisis in 2010. We focus on the third major cycle of this segmentation, analyzing the economic development models followed in each sub-period along with the social developments that are intertwined with the country's economic trajectory. For this period, we also examine key sectors of the economy such as public debt, GDP, and the current account balance. The fiscal and monetary stabilization achieved after the end of Worl War II and the end of the Civil War. The period starting in 1950’s is known as the third major cycle and lasts till today. During 1953-1973 the Growth Greek Miracle takes place. During this period the annual growth rate of GDP was at around 7.8%. The end of the dictatorship after 1974 and the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus established the modern Greek Republic leading to the participation of Greece to the EU in 1981. From 1980’s till 2000 the GDP significantly fell while Greece’s international competitiveness suffered. During this period Greek Governments borrowed beyond their limits to meet the wage demands that unions arose, redistribution of wealth, social peach and re-election goals. It was only after 2000 and the entrance in the Economic and Monetary Union that Greece took advantage due to real interest rates that lead the GDP to rise again. However, this Euphoria period was mainly based to high consumption rates that lead GDP to high levels. Moreover, the accumulation of dept due to external borrowing led to Greece’s competitiveness deterioration and overall, to the major dept crisis that Greece faced from 2010 till 2018. In the second part, we collect and analyze data from domestic and international statistical-economic sources, presenting them diagrammatically in favor of better understanding regarding the evolution of social variables over the past two decades, particularly how they evolved during the memorandum period. We examine areas such as unemployment, employment levels, and the trajectory of the country's workforce, the development of labor relations, levels of poverty and social exclusion in conjunction with social benefits, as well as more sensitive social indicators such as the birth-death balance, the evolution of suicides during the crisis, and the aging population levels. The conclusions drawn are presented in the final part of the thesis. During this period Greece faced a painful austerity in every aspect of life. The results of this thesis indicate that birth to death ratio has worsened to a negative balance. The ratio of the active workforce is continuously declining, the unemployment rate rose from below 10% (2005–2009) to around 25% (2014–2015), an estimated 36% of Greeks lived below the poverty line in 2014. Due to the crisis Greece implemented a high taxation system combined with expenditure cut in wages and welfare state provisions. OECD reports than approximately 22% of the population were unable to meet daily food expenses and lived below poverty levels. High unemployment rate drove to a large number of suicide attempts, approximately an increase of 38%. Due to the economic and social crisis there were political effects that took place during the 8-year period. The two dominant political parties lost their support and collapsed to a certain degree. A period of two to three party coalition governments arose and the Neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn became the third largest party to the Greek Parliament. Overall, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the latest history of the economy of the modern Greece and to which extent the decisions taken at that time have affected social state and various social variables. Thus, this paper aims to identify the major political ideas that underline the country's economic trajectory along with geopolitical and international factors to some extent. The challenge that lays ahead is whether Greece can adapt further transformation to make better use of the EU environment that lives in and to improve levels of prosperity, to secure democracy and enhance its competitiveness. | el |
